Statistics about credit card thefts

Nowadays one of the most common problem people faces is the credit card thefts. With every passing day, credit card thefts are increasing rapidly. 

According to the latest research, every 15th credit card user is hit by credit card-fraud. Statistics for credit card thefts are increasing every year. According to FTC, Federal Trade Commission, in the year 2005, there were about 210,000 complaints all related to credit card thefts. That’s not all; people lost over 200 million dollars in these credit card theft cases. In these 210,000 complaints, 45% of them are the complaints about credit card theft on the internet. According to FTC Statistics for the year 2005, the most complaints about credit card thefts were received from Washington DC.

Now let’s see how fast the credit card crime is increasing. According to FTC, in the year 2003, the total numbers of credit card theft complaints were about 90,000 and the total money lost was about 450 million dollars. In the year 2004, total number of complaints increased to 120,000 and the money lost was about 550,000 million dollars. These Statistics shows that credit card crime is increasing rapidly so we should be a lot more careful these days. According to FTC Statistics, credit card thefts are on the top of all identity thefts.

So what communication method is used for these credit card thefts? Internet Email is on the top of the list with 35 percent of all methods used. Internet websites are second on the list with 20 percent. Next is the Mail with 18 percent. Phone is on the fourth position with 17 percent. In the year 2005, according to FTC Statistics, there were 60,000 complaints about credit card theft through internet websites. Here one more question arises and that is, what is the age of people hit by credit card thefts? Well FTC Statistics shows that 60 percent of the people that are hit by credit card thefts have an age between 30 and 50.

The alarming statistics of credit card thefts are a matter of concern for low apr credit card targeted to the domestic consumers as well as for student credit cards.
